Our Favorite Fall Watches [2023] By Extropian

It only seems like yesterday that we were offering you our selection of the best summer watches, but fall is already on its way. The landscape will soon start changing along with the weather, so it’s an ideal time for heading out and exploring nature before the winter chill sets in. It makes us think of deep greens and reds mixed with earthy brown tones, the smell of woodsmoke and rain, and hiking in the hills or forests. Are there watches out there which can capture these seasonal sensations? You bet there are, and we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorites!

Aerotec - Ace (Vintage Brown Dial) ($399)

Fall isn’t all about the great outdoors, however. And, although Aerotec’s Ace is ostensibly a a Pilot/Dive watch, it’s blend of warm bronzy tones, vintage style, and aged leather makes us think of hunkering down on a cold rainy day in front of a roaring fire with a glass of something warming and maybe a good book to hand. But maybe that’s just us! Whatever the case, the Ace is a great-looking watch featuring a lovely Sandwich dial, elegant Cathedral hands, and a classically simple bronze case which will age and patina beautifully as the years pass by.

Akrone - C-04 Gold Eye (€429)

Fall may not be peak party season, but there’s always an excuse to dress up, and this elegant offering from French brand Akrone is the perfect Dress watch for the colder months. The refined curves and domed crystal of its Bauhaus-inspired case give it a timeless look, accentuated by the fine Dauphine hands which recall the nibs of post-war pens. The retro ‘50s aesthetic is rounded off with minimalist indices and a classic Milanese mesh bracelet. But the “Gold Eye” version makes this list due to its beautiful dial, with a black lacquered center and circular-brushed outer ring with its earthy brown tones. Superb autumnal style!

An0rdain - Model 1 Green Fumé (£2,595)

Glasgow-based An0rdain is renowned for the quality of its enamel dials, made in-house by its own team of master jewelers. And, not surprisingly, the dial is the star of this wonderful watch - another dressy option ideal for any special occasion. The unique depth of color on the Green Fumé version suggests the verdant coloring of the autumnal forest, just before the leaves begin to turn. The vintage indices, inspired by old cartographic maps of the Scottish Highlands, evoke the idea of long hikes in the misty hills, while the slim profile of the case and the brand’s signature heat-treated needle hands round off this supremely stylish package.

Christopher Ward - C65 Dune Bronze (€1,235)

The Dune Bronze really has everything you’d want from a fall watch. It’s a vintage-inspired Field watch with a bronze case, a brown vintage oak leather strap, and (in the Beach Grass version), a deep green dial with a shimmering sunburst finish - all things that make you think of a long hike in the woods - while the bronze-rimmed applied markers filled with lume will make for perfect visibility on dark autumn nights. This British brand has built a solid reputation for its blend of tradition and innovation, and this classy little number is another feather in their cap.

Formex - Field Automatic Mahogany Red (€790)

Swiss brand Formex specializes in Steel and Titanium sports watches inspired by the engineering and mechanics of high-performance racing cars, but their Field Automatic is a more traditional take on the classic Field watch, featuring a lightweight Titanium case and a modern-looking Sandwich dial with recessed markers and a curved outer chapter ring which give it an attractive sense of depth. It comes in a range of subtle autumnal colors, such as Sage Green, but we especially love the Mahogany Red edition paired with a Caraffi Brown leather strap. It just makes us think of roasting chestnuts for some reason!

Houtman Watches - Murchison Burnt Earth (€418)

With the Murchison, Australian brand Houtman has created another great Dress watch for the fall-inspired watch geek. The salmon-spawning season occurs between October and December, so what could be more appropriate than the Burnt Earth edition with its richly-colored salmon gradient dial with crisp black numerals and elegant leaf hands? It almost makes us feel hungry! It comes with a brown leather and a suede strap, both of which perfectly complement its warm autumnal aesthetic, but you can also add a Stainless-steel bracelet if you so desire!

Selten - Salvage Bronze - Terrarium ($659)

Terrarium literally means “ a receptacle for earth”  - a contained mini-garden in other words!. And this edition of Selten’s Salvage Bronze collection manages to conjure that impression perfectly, with the mossy greens and flecks of yellow on its hand-patinated dial, and the earthy tones of its bronze case and bezel. It’s like a walk through a fall landscape distilled into a wristwatch. And who would’ve thought that was even possible!?

Signum - Siege (Green Copper/Turquoise) ($639)

Fall is a great time for getting back to nature after the summer heat subsides, and a Field watch is an ideal companion for long hikes in the country. The Siege is the perfect choice for this time of year, combining a modernist take on the classic Field format with a unique dial made of green copper turquoise which looks like freshly pressed leaves in a bed of earth. Pair it with an olive green canvas strap and you have the perfect companion for the great outdoors.

Vero - Workhorse Backcountry ($425)

US brand Vero makes watches designed for adventure, and the Workhorse Backcountry is the ideal companion for fall-based outdoors activities. Inspired by off-road trails riddled with mud and grit, this sports chronograph has an unapologetically rugged, functional build with a chunky Cerakote-coated Stainless-steel case, triple-gasket screw down crown, AR coated sapphire crystal, and rubberized steel bullhorns for added protection. With a well-executed dial design and an inner rotating bezel, it’s finished off with a suitably autumnal olive green and black color scheme, carried over into the nylon velcro strap which adds to the adventure aesthetic this terrific watch is aiming for.
