History of Sangamon
Founded in 2019
Sangamon Watch Company pays homage to the iconic Sangamon River, a defining part of Abraham Lincoln's early life and career. The river, which runs from Central Illinois to the Mississippi River, holds a special place in Lincoln's heart as his family settled along its banks when he was young. The word "Sangamon" itself, meaning "land of milk and honey" in Pottawatomie Indian, symbolizes the richness of the area's history. In 1831, at the age of 21, Lincoln lived near the river in New Salem and even built a flatboat to sail to New Orleans, further cementing his connection to the Sangamon River. The founders of Sangamon Watch Company have chosen this name to honor the rich history and significance of the Sangamon River in American history, and to keep this legacy alive with every timepiece they create. The Sangamon region was also home to one of the finest watchmakers in the United States- The Illinois Watch Company. It operated for 61 years building nearly six million watches and had over 1200 employees at its peak. It was a pioneer of the time-keeping industry and railroads across the world utilized their technology.
